YAXHA
Our favorite site: A lake surrounded by tropical forest of the Mayan biosphere with many animal species, some endangered. An
archaeological
site of exceptional value, the only one that allows to see the organization of a Mayan urban area with an estimated population of 40,000 residents.
A very decent lodge to spend the night. A breathtaking sunset from the top of the pyramid 2-16, with parrots, toucans, howler monkeys and "spider" monkeys who seem to observe the visitors. A night excursion on the lake to watch the crocodiles, your guide might catch some little ones to show you.
TOPOXTE
A neo classical site located on a small island of the lake Yaxha. The access is by boat from the Sombrero lodge.
UAXACTUN
A very ancient Mayan city situated in the parc of Tikal. It takes about one hour (by car) to get there.
AGUATECA
Impressive site on the shore of the Petexbatun lake. The access is by boat via the Rio Pasion. The lodge is not very far and gives a proper accommodation in the middle of the tropical forest.
Exotism guaranteed.
CEIBAL
The access is also via Rio Pasion. In addition to the very pleasant boat trip, you will discover a remarkable and diverse fauna and flora. This site possesses superb Mayan steles.
PETEXBATUN
This is a paradisiacal place for amateurs of wild nature. The lake is surrounded by the Mayan biosphere. It allows an unforgettable stop to whom takes the time to spend a few moments there. The very comfortable lodge provides a great accommodation
CANCUEN

Located in Alta Verapaz, on the shore of the Rio Pasion, commercial road of the Mayans, the forgotten city of Cancuen was discovered in 1907 and was left aside until these last years. Nowadays it's been restored and the interesting part of the project is that the indigenous community is participating in it, implicated we might think that they will take care of the maintenance and the protection of whole site. The researchers estimate that Cancuen used to have a population of 40,000 inhabitants. Far from the traditional touristic path, this place makes an original destination. No structure is yet available, and it's still adventure.
EL MIRADOR
Located 7km from the Mexican border, this site has the largest number of edifices. It's probably the oldest also. The access is by foot after a few days of trek. Adventure guaranteed.
EL ZOTS
Archaeolocical site located in the middle of the jungle, the access is by foot also. This site is the habitat of a great quantity of wild animals, including the "perico ligero", sort of ant eater, very rare, as well as bats, very important in the biosphere for the spreading of the seeds.
YAXCHILAN
Situated in Mexico on the other side of the Usumacinta river. Very beautiful Mayan site, well restored. It used to be the temple of the music. The access from Guatemala is very easy, and there are no border fees.
BONAMPAK
Also located in Mexico, the access is very easy from Bethel. This site is "run" by the Lacandons, who are known to be the only true
descendents
of the Mayans. This place is really worth seeing and it's the last place with mural painting from the Mayan era. |
